Week 22 – Decorah, Iowa

30 Jun

I took a trip to Decorah, Iowa, to see the famous Decorah Eagles from webcam fame.  We waited until they had fledged so we could get up close and personal, and boy, did we!  It was amazing to see these wonderful creatures, both in person and in their natural environment.  These two were having a very loud and long conversation.  Sadly, the eagle on the right was killed this past Sunday after being electrocuted on an unprotected power line.  I guess the two remaining siblings have their very own guardian angel now.

This is the youngest eagle with her first fish catch. In this shot, she was trying to lift it out of the water, but wasn’t successful. She had been caught earlier that morning and banded with a GPS unit. After watching her for several more hours, it was obvious that it didn’t bother her a bit.

Juvenile Bald Eagle. This picture is good for showing the size of the eagle, compared to the red-winged blackbird next to it. They stand almost two feet tall at this point.

I overexposed this shot just to show the beautiful markings on the underside of this young eagle. Seeing them fly over our heads was absolutely breathtaking.
